Visualizing chemistry

Core Research Group

Alex (Madsen) Kararo

Alex completed her BA degree at the University of Minnesota, Morris with a degree in Chemistry and a 9-12 MN chemistry teaching license. She worked as a teaching and lab assistant and taught high school chemistry for a year before coming to Purdue. Her current research interests include teacher professional development, teacher pedagogical content knowledge and supporting high school STEM teachers in bringing innovative research into their classrooms.

Ashley J. Schuman

Ashley completed her BS degree in chemistry at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, MI.  Her research interests include visualizing reactions in organic chemistry and improving laboratory safety.

Ashton Hjerstedt

Ashton completed her BS in chemistry from Northern Arizona University and a MS in chemistry (emphasis in organic chemistry) from the University of Oregon. She worked as an analytical chemist at a small biotech company before coming to Purdue.

Her research interests include faculty/student misconceptions in organic chemistry as well as the benefits to using dynamic visualizations in the course.

Christopher A. Randles

Chris completed his BSc (Hons) degree in Chemistry at the University of Hull in the UK and his PhD in chemical education also at the University of Hull. In-between his undergraduate and PhD he trained and taught as a teacher at both primary and secondary education in the Humberside region.
His research interests include curriculum evaluation, problem solving in science education, impacts of cognitive functionality upon problem solving and ‘soft skill’ development.

Elijah Roth

Elijah completed his BS degree at Fresno Pacific University in Fresno, California. His research interests include the use of multimedia to promote student motivation in science learning, specifically in physical chemistry.  How can we make students want to learn?

Jared Breakall

Jared completed his BS degree in Chemistry Education from Brigham Young University-Idaho in 2014. He worked as an educational consultant, undergraduate research assistant and taught middle school science for a year before coming to Purdue.
His current research interests include the improvement of multiple-choice general chemistry assessments through the design of interactive resources.

Kevin Wee

Kevin completed his BS degree in Chemistry (emphasis at Chemical Biology), Summa Cum Laude at Tunghai University, Taiwan. He worked as chemistry research assistant at National Taiwan University, Taiwan for about three years before coming to Purdue.
His research interests include multimedia chemistry education and public engagement in chemistry.

Stephanie Santos-Díaz

Stephanie completed her BS in Chemistry at Universidad de Puerto Rico (UPR) at Cayey, PR.
Her research interests include using visualizations to assess students’ understanding of graphs and using virtual reality (VR) to teach chemistry.

Roy Tasker

Professor of Chemistry

Roy completed his BSc(Hons) degree at the University of Queensland in Australia, and his PhD in synthetic inorganic chemistry at Otago University in New Zealand.

His R&D interests are in visualizing chemistry, particularly in living chemical systems.
